What is 5-Amino-1MQ?
5 -Amino-1MQ (5-Amino-1-methylquinolinium) is a small molecule classified as an NNMT inhibitor : it blocks the activity of the nicotinamide N-methyltransferase enzyme, which plays a key role in cellular energy metabolism , fat storage and aging .
Originally developed to study metabolic disorders and insulin resistance , 5-Amino-1MQ is now being monitored in research on metabolism and longevity, particularly for its studied role in reducing the size of fat cells, increasing NAD+ levels and metabolic efficiency.
The NNMT/NAD+ mechanism
When NNMT is overactive—as is often observed in obesity, aging, or chronic diseases in the literature—it limits the availability of nicotinamide and reduces NAD+ production. By blocking NNMT , 5-Amino-1MQ is being studied for its potential to restore cellular and metabolic balance in research models.
